Beowulf is an Old English epic poem which was written by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet. Cause the writer is an Anglo-Saxon poet, Beowulf contains a lot culture of Anglo-Saxon which is one of the important origin of American culture - fighting evil till the end of life. Moreover, the first heroism people can discover starts at this poem. Nowadays, we still can find most of archetypal heroic and evil figures appearing in it. Beowulf has a translation version in modern English. The translation version is earlier to read and has a very compelling narrative.

Talk about some of my understandings of the epic poem. It narrates three main battles in the life of Beowulf. These three battles seem represent the definitions of evil of three different times. The fight with Grendel, represents the age of barbarism, which fight for life. The fight with Grendel’s mother, represents the age of tribes, which fight for personal or tribal resentment. The fight with dragon, represents the age after a country established, which fight for sovereignty or interest dispute. The author defines them as evil cause of their curl behaviors. I admit these definitions are really classic and familiar. However, who knows the characters in reality like?
