Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times. Twelve women have won the Nobel Prize for science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England, Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth. Mary and her father collected fossils(化石)in their village on the south coast of Great Britain. Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old, Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons(骨架)of several animals that no longer existed on earth. She didn‘t become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891, a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska traveled to Paris to study physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 along with another scientist. Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time for Chemistry. Marie Curie was one of the few women at the time who became famous as a scientist.

BRITAIN is a popular tourist place, but tours of the country have pros and cons.
GOOD NEWS
Free museums. No charge for outstanding collections of art and antiquities. Pop music. Britain is the only country to compete with the US on this score.
Black cabs. London taxi drivers know where they are going even if there are never enough of them at weekends or night.
Choice of food. Visitors can find everything from Japanese to Swedish restaurants.
Fashion. Not only do fashion junkies love deeply and respect highly brand names such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen; street styles are justly loved, too. BAD NEWS
Poor service. ―It‘s part of the image of the place. People can dine out on the rudeness they have experienced,‖ says Professor Tony Seaton, of Luton University‘s International Tourism Research Center.
Poor public transport. Trains and buses are promised to disappoint the keenest tourists, although the over crowded London tube is unbelievably popular. Rain. Still in the number one complaint.
No air-conditioning. So that even splendidly hot summers become as unbearable as the downpours.

Sean and Danielle were leaving the music store when they heard the crash. \"What do you suppose that was?\" asked Sean.
\"I don't know for sure,\" said Danielle, \"but it sure sounded bad. It's right over there. Let's go and look.\"
Sean and Danielle knew they would see an accident. But they didn't know what to expect. There in the middle of the street was a bicycle that had been hit by a car. The bicycle rider was sitting in the street, shaking his head.
\"Look at that,\" said Sean, \"he's not even wearing a helmet. He is one lucky guy\".
\"No kidding,\" Danielle replied. \"Look at the driver of the car. She's just as lucky. She's not wearing a seat belt.\"
Sean and Danielle are right. The bicycle rider is very lucky, he was not hurt. Riding a bicycle is a lot of fun, but it can also be very dangerous. You have to pay attention all the time to what you're doing. You also have to follow safety rules.
When you ride a bicycle, remember that you share the road with cars and trucks. These vehicles are a lot bigger than you are. So, always wear a helmet when riding your bicycle. Always means \"every time\" even if you are just riding around the block.
Follow the same rules as car and truck drivers. Bicycle riders also have some special rules. Here are some special rules you should follow:
● Do not ride your bicycle on the sidewalk. By not riding on the sidewalk, you won't run into a pedestrian.
● Ride on bike paths or trails when they are available. ● Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
● Always ride on the right-hand side of the road.
● When you ride with a friend, do not ride next to each other. Ride in single field, one behind the other.
● Obey all traffic signals and signs. Stop at all stop signs. ● Walk your bicycle across busy crossings.
● Be sure to use hand signals when you turn and stop. Follow these safety rules when riding a bicycle at night. ● Have a headlight that works.
● Have these reflectors on your bicycle: yellow or white in front, and red ones on the pedals and back.
● Wear light-colored clothing so drivers can see you.
You should always keep your bicycle in good working order. Make sure the brakes work properly and that your tires have enough air. If you find anything wrong with your bike, fix it or have it fixed before you ride it again.
1. How did Sean and Danielle know that they would see an accident?
A. They saw somebody falling off the bike. B. They heard the sound of the crash. C. They were asked to offer some help. D. They remembered what might happen. 2. What Sean and Danielle saw in the middle of the street __________.
A. were a bicycle, the rider, a car and the driver B. was a bicycle under the damaged car C. was a car without safe belt and the helmet D. surprised both the rider and the car driver 3 Why did Sean and Danielle consider the rider and the driver lucky?
A. Because the bicycle and the car were lost. B. Because the rider didn‘t wear his helmet. C. Because they both were not badly hurt. D. Because the driver didn‘t wear the seat belt. 4. From the passage, we learn that _________.
A. carelessness can result in accidents B. we can‘t ride bicycles in the street C. the driver was quite rude to the rider D. the bicycle rider was sent to hospital 5. Which of the following breaks the rules for a safe bicycle riding? A. Get off your bicycle and walk across busy crossings. B. Follow the safety rules as the car and truck drivers do. C. Fix light reflectors to your bicycle when riding at night. D. Ride next to other riders, but not too close to each other. (四)
Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A‘s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as ―successful‖ as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father‘s friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son‘s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father‘s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?
The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I‘m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I‘m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

Athens Olympic 110m hurdle champion Liu Xiang felt so relieved to return to racetrack after getting out of the great number of social activities.
Liu arrived in hometown Shanghai Wednesday night and was about to resume training shortly after.
―I am so exhausted from so many social activities, which made me even more tired than training,‖ said the 21-year-old Liu, who wrote a new chapter in China‘s Olympic history by winning the country‘s first ever athletics short-distance running title in the men‘s 110m hurdles in Athens in August.
―I am happy that I will resume(继续)my training soon back in Shanghai,‖ said the Shanghai native. He turned into an instant national hero with the Olympic glory and one of the most popular Olympic gold medalists, taking part in scores of celebration activities since he returned to China early September.
―My regular training has been interrupted for such a long time that I think I can only run at about 13.5 seconds now,‖ said Liu, who clocked a world record-tying time of 12.91 to clinch the title.
―I would rather forget what I have achieved in the past and try my best to realize a higher goal,‖ he
said.
Liu already missed the Berlin Golden League Series on Sunday and won‘t be able to catch the IAAF Grand Prix final slated for September 18-19 in Monaco.

The first people who gave names to hurricanes were those who knew them best — the people of Puerto Rico. The small island of Puerto Rico is in the West Indies, off the coast of Florida. This is where all the hurricanes begin that strike the east coast of the United States. Often they pass near Puerto Rico or cross it on their way north. The people of Puerto Rico expect some of these unwelcome visitors every year. Each one is named after the Saint‘s Day on which it arrives. Two of the most destructive storms were the Santo Ana in 1840 and the San Ciriaco in 1899.
Giving girls‘ names to hurricanes is a fairly new idea. It all began with a story called ―Storm‖, written by George Stewart in 1941. In it a weatherman amused himself by naming storms after girls he knew. He named one Maria. The story describes how Maria grew and developed, and how she changed the lives of people when she struck the United States.
Weathermen of the U.S. Army and Navy used the same system during World WarⅡ. They were studying weather conditions over the Pacific Ocean. One of their duties was to warn American ships and planes when a storm was coming. Whenever they spotted one, they gave it a girl‘s name. The first one of the year was given a name beginning with [A]. The second one got a name beginning with [B]. They used all the letters from A to W, and still the storms kept coming. They had to use three lists from A to W to have enough names to go around. This was the first list of hurricane names that followed the alphabet. It served as a model for the system the Weather Bureau (局) introduced in 1942.
Before 1950 the Weather Bureau had no special system for naming hurricanes. When a hurricane was born down in the West Indies, the Weather Bureau simply collected information about it. It reported how fast the storm was moving and where it would go next. Weather reports warned people in the path of the hurricane, so that they could do whatever was necessary to protect themselves.
This system worked out fine as long as weather reports talked about only one hurricane at a
time. But one week in September 1950 there were three hurricanes at the same time. The things began to get confused. Some people got the hurricanes mixed up and didn‘t know which was which. This convinced the Weather Bureau that it needed a code for naming the storms in order to avoid confusion in the future.
1. The practice of giving girls‘ names to hurricanes was started by __________.
A. a radio operator B. an author C. a sailor D. local people
2. The purpose for which weathermen of the army and navy began using girls‘ names for hurricanes was __________.

C. to keep information from the enemy D. to follow the standard method of the United States 3. The Weather Bureau began naming hurricanes because it would help them ________. A. make use of military records B. remember them
C. collect information more rapidly D. warn people more efficiently (七)
The British policeman has several nicknames, but the most frequently used are “copper”and“bobby”。The first name comes from the verb ―cop‖ meaning ―to take‖ or ―capture‖,and the second comes from the first name of Sir Robert Peel,a 19th century politician, who was the founder of the police force. An early nickname for the policeman was ―peeler‖,but this name had died out.

Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.
To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn, as soon as possible, these four basic strokes; butterfly, backstroke, Breaststroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.
In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:
1). Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don‘t risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble.
2). Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach, Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good. Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.
3). Don't smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it. 4). Work at any activity that builds muscles. 1. Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____. A. they can talk B. they start walking
C. they have no fear of the water D. they are five or six years old
2. The author believes that fear of water is_____.
A. stupid B. sensible C. dangerous D. not smart 3. The stroke that some young swimmers use first is_____.
A. butterfly B. backstroke C. breaststroke D. crawl
4 . According to the passage, you should not swim alone because_____.
A. the water is too cold B. your parents would not be happy C. something in the water might attack D. you might drown (十二)
Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don‘t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don‘t have to
worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be ―green gyms‖. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it‘s free. 1. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of? A. Cycling around a lake.
B. Motor racing in the desert. D. Swimming in a sports center.
C. Playing basketball in a gym.
2. What do we know about golf from the passage?
A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain. B. It causes water shortages in some areas. C. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
D. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
3. The author writes the passage to_______.
A. show us the function of major sports
B. introduce different types of environment-friendly sports
C. discuss the major influence of popular sports D. encourage us to go in for green sports (十三)
Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts(购物手推车) more intelligent. They will help shoppers find all kinds of goods, and keep a record of the bill.
The touch-screen devices(触摸屏装置) are on show at the Food Marketing Institute‘s exhibition here this week. ―These devices are able to create value and get you around the store quicker,‖ said Michael Alexander, manager of Springboard Retail Networks Inc., which makes a smart cart computer called the Concierge.
Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A similar device, IBM‘s ―shopping buddy‖, has recently been tested at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts.
Neither device tells you how much fat or vitamin is in your cart, but they will inform you of the items on sale. The idea is to make it easier for people to buy, not to have second thought that maybe you should put something back on the shelf.
―The whole model is driven by advertisers‘ need to get in front of shoppers,‖ said Alexander, ―They‘re not watching 30-second TV advertisements anymore.‖
People can use a home computer to make their shopping list. Once at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card to start system that will organize the trip around the store. If you‘re looking for toothpastes, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear on the screen showing where you are and where you can find them.
The devices also keep a record of what you buy. When you‘ve finished, the device worked out your bill. Then you go to the checker or place your card into a self-checkout stand and pay. The new computerized shopping assistants don‘t come cheap. The Buddy devices will cost the average store about $ 160,000, and the Concierge will cost stores about $ 500 for each device. 1 The underlined word ―They‖ (paragraph 1) refers to__________.
A. supermarkets B. shop assistants C. shopping carts D. shop managers
2 Which of the following is the correct order of shopping with the computerized shopping cart?
a. Start the system. b. Make a shopping list.
c. Find the things you want. d. Go to a self-checkout stand. A. a b d c B. b a c d C. a c b d D. b c a d 3 We can learn from the last paragraph that _________. A. intelligent shopping carts cost a large sum of money B. the Concierge is cheaper than the Buddy devices
C. shop assistants with computer knowledge are well paid
D. average stores prefer the Concierge to the Buddy devices
4 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The touch-screen devices will add more fun to your shopping.
B. Shoppers don‘t have to watch advertisements any more if they use the new devices. C. The new devices can help find what the shoppers want and the goods at a discount. D. The devices will remind the shoppers to have a second thought before they buy anything. (十四)
To what degree can a computer achieve intelligence? The answer to this question may lie in a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child and the Internet.
If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid‘s huge memory. It can recite many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season.
He knows every word in the dictionary and the weather in every major city areas across the US. However, if you ask Smarter Child other questions, you get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child‘s age returns. ―One year, 11 days, 16 hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds!‖ Asking where he lives gets, ―In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.‖
Smarter Child uses the vast information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for instance, Smarter Child goes to American Heritage Dictionary online. For the weather, he visits www.intellicast.com.
Some scientists believe that by joining the many systems of the Internet, an artificial being with the combined knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, if Smarter Child wants to think and learn on his own like the boy-computer David in the movie A. I. Artificial Intelligence, he must overcome two problems.
The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are labeled in different ways. That‘s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it himself.
Another problem is that while Smarter Child can process information more exactly and faster than any human, he lacks common sense—a basic grounding of knowledge that is obvious to any young child.

no–-that's for a pencil thin who doesn't eat. One answer is, fashion stylist.
Girls can find it hard to ignore this attractiveness and the field is opening up to normal girls, not only style or fashion design majors(某专业的学生). \"It looked too high before, but now I find it more approachable,\" said Xue Rui, 22, a Fudan University Chinese literature graduate who works as an assistant stylist at Hermès in Shanghai. \"There is no certain principle in dressing up models, and you can try every way with your own distinct taste to make them pretty and attractive.\" Some professionals said that Xue's not mistaken.
The attractiveness of this work is not only in the wonderful clothes. Now it's a career with a bright future and pay packet. The income can allow you to buy expensive clothes and, with your name and photo appearing on pages, readers will remember your fashion tips.
A stylist at a fashion magazine can have some unique rights. You have a chance to contact famous persons and dress them up in a style you like. You need to cooperate with top photographers and select places around the world to take photos in. You might also be invited to fashion shows of top brands and can select some of the favorite clothes.
\"You have to be ‗all-round‘:from hair and make up to clothes, shoes, and accessories (配饰) to the event,\" said He Qing, 21, a junior in fashion design at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. \"You have to know everything, and handle several things at the same time. It's challenging. That's why I love it.\"
