Are you the first or the last child in your family? Or are you a middle or an only child? Some people 46 it matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that the eldest children are smart. They are very likely to be 47 . The reason for this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child; they give them or her much attention. So this child is likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in the family? Middle children don’t get so much attention, 48 they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, though, often gets special treatment. He or she is the baby. Often this child grows up to be funny or charming. Do you believe these ideas about birth order too? A recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in their lives. they 49 followed orders. Rules didn’t mean as much to later children in the family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took chances and they often did better in life.

Sometimes good manners in one place are very bad manners somewhere else. Almost everywhere eating 51 means that people are very friendly to each other. But in parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating beside each other. So they politely turn their backs to each other when they are taking food. Some East Africans spit four times as a kind of blessing. They do it to show that they want a 52 person to get well, or to bless a new--‐born baby. In many countries, spitting means something completely different. It may mean that you hate someone. Music came into George’s life when he was fourteen. That’s when he heard a British 78 named Lonnie Donegan. The music Lonnie Donegan played was similar to rock and roll, except it was faster. They called this new music “skiffle” George loved the sound of it, and begged his mother to buy him a guitar. She 79 agreed, and bought one for five dollars.

George taught himself how to play. He practiced so much that the tips of his fingers started to bleed (流 血). Soon he wanted a 80 guitar, an electric guitar. An electric guitar is much louder because when it’s plugged in, the sound runs through a speaker. Even though the guitar was sixty dollars, his mother bought it for him.

Antarctica (南极洲) is the fifth--‐largest continent on Earth. It is also the coldest, windiest, driest and highest continent. It is an ice--‐covered place where no large plants grow, and no land animals live there.

Antarctica covers an area of more than 13.6 million square kilometers. It is nearly twice the size of Australia, or one--‐and--‐a--‐half times the size of the United States of America. Antarctica does not belong to one country, and it has no government. People visit Antarctica usually as tourists, or to do scientific research – but no one lives there all the time.

Antarctica was the last continent to be discovered. It is not certain who first saw Antarctica, but sailors began to map Antarctica’s coast from their ships in the 1800s. The first confirmed (证实) landing was in the

mid--‐10s.

Over the next few years, several men tried but failed to reach the South Pole, which is the Earth’s southernmost point.

Finally, a team led by Norwegian Roald Amundsen reached the South Poe in 1911. By then, countries around the world were becoming more and more interested in the frozen continent, and soon seven nations: Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom, had laid claim to parts of Antarctica.

As so many nations had made a claim to territory in Antarctica, it was clear that fighting might break out. Diplomats (外交官) from different countries wanted to stop a war from starting, so they began talking about a treaty for Antarctica. A treaty is a written agreement signed by two or more nations.

Several countries had already set up research stations in Antarctica where scientists could live and work. Most scientists worked during the summer months when it was not as cold as in winter. Scientists hoped a treaty would allow them to continue their work and to exchange information with scientists from other countries. 88. Antarctica is the largest continent on Earth, isn’t it?(1 分) .
