As is seen from the two graphs, it is clear that with the rapid growth of U.S. population from 1800 to 1900, the number of wildlife species on the verge of extinction is experiencing a similar trend. We can easily draw a conclusion that the sharp decline of wildlife species resulted from the population growth. As human population increases, the species of wildlife decline, and some are even on the brink of extinction.
We may cite a variety of reasons for this situation. But the most contributing one is human being’s weak sense of wildlife protection which leads to the decrease of wildlife as a result of cases of illegal hunting and killing of wildlife for profits. Besides, the destruction of ecological environment also plays a pushing role. Less and less forest and pasture coverage with more and more soil erosion due to population problem make it even more difficult for the wildlife to survive. Hence, unfortunately but naturally a soaring number of human population comes in tandem with a descending variety of wildlife.
Ecological environment construction and protection is a pressing and long-term task. To tackle the problem calls for, above all, the government’s efforts to control population growth and to enhance the laws to forbid wildlife hunting. Moreover, common citizens should take practical actions to protect wild animals as well as our living environment.
Passage 2
As we can see from the two pictures, great changes have taken place in the world commercial fishing. In 1990 there was only one ship in the sea rich in fish, while in 1995, with the increasing number of fishing ships, only one fish could be found in the ocean crowded with ships. Obviously, the ever-deveolping fishing industry had a devastating effect on the fishing resource.
The purpose of the drawer is to warn people that we should spare no efforts in protecting the resources in the sea by well managing the development of the fishing industry. This kind of profit-oriented fishing can only bring about the ecological unbalance. In addition, profit-pursuing makes people exploit other kinds of natural resources unlimitedly and blindly without considering the potential damage that can be done to nature, and more important, to human beings.
It is known to all that effective measures should be taken to deal with the problems of over exploitation of our natural resources. For one thing, laws should be enforced and observed to keep the balance of nature by controlling commercial fishing. For another, people should be educated to realize the value of these resources. Only in this way, can this problem be properly solved.
Passage 3
As is shown in the pictures, with the rampancy of commercial fishing, the number of fish dramatically (sharply) decreased. From the pictures we can see that there were various kinds of fish and only one fishing-boat in 1900. On the contrary, in 1995 there was only one fish, with many fishing-boats.
1
The purpose of this picture is to show us that due (great/ enough) attention has to be paid to the decline of ocean resources. Owing to over-fishing the number of fish has obviously dropped. If we let this situation continue as it is, we do not know where fish will be in the future. By that time, our environment will suffer a great destruction.
Therefore, it is imperative for us to take drastic measures. For one thing, we should appeal to our authorities to make strict laws to control commercial fishing. For another, we should enhance the awareness of people that the ocean resources are very vital to us. Only in this way can we protect our ocean resources. Also I believe that we humans can overcome this difficulty, and we will have a brighter future.
Passage 4
A Brief History of World Commercial Fishing
This picture shows a drastic change in the world’s commercial fishing. The two parts display totally different scenes in 1900 and 1995. In 1900, there were a large number of fish while only one boat was fishing on the ocean. But in 1995 fishing boats increased sharply while only one fish was left. The fish supplies have almost been exhausted by over-fishing.
Judging from the picture, we can see that within about 100 years, humans have stripped the sea of her generous offerings. If we don’t put an end to the trend, then the fish in the ocean could become extinct species in the foreseeable future.
Therefore, it is high time we took effective measures to solve this problem. First, we must bring world population under a reasonable control, as over fishing is largely due to the need to fill the additional mouths. Second, every year in the fish’s mating season, a \"grace period\" should be enforced during which the fish are allowed to reproduce themselves. Third, strict laws should be implemented. Last but not least, we should enhance the awareness of the public that the ocean resources are very vital to us. Only when these above mentioned measures are put into practice can we save the fish from disappearing completely.
Passage 5
The picture, “a brief history of commercial fishing”, shows us that there have been less and less fish in the ocean for the last century. The two parts that comprise the picture display totally different scenes in 1900 and 1995. In1900 there were a large number of fish while only one boat was fishing on the ocean. But in 1995 fishing boats increased sharply while only one fish was left. We can’t help asking ourselves a disturbing question: will there be a day when no fish are for our descendants?
It is most obvious that the drawer means to alert us to the diminishing fishery resources because of excessive global commercial fishing. If no measures are taken to ensure the moderate exploration and reasonable disposition of natural resources, a destructive ecological disaster may not be far away and the next victim will probably be man himself.
Therefore, it is high time we took effective measures to solve this problem. The essential solution, in my opinion, is to combine fishing with raising and protecting the fish. In addition, people’s awareness of protecting natural resources must be heightened through education and publicity. In a word, we can never solve the problem until all of us take actions to protect fishery resources.
Passage 6
2
As can be seen from this vivid picture, like a light, love means much more to those in great difficulty than to those in comforts. Love, as illustrated in the picture, is just the oil lamp, which certainly shines brighter in the dark. In other words, the darker the place is, the more precious the light will be. Love is somewhat the same: it is most needed by those who are in urgent need of help and considered most precious in most difficult situations. Therefore, as people living in the modern society, we all should contribute our love to those people.
I can exemplify this conclusion with the Poverty Alleviation Project. It is known to all that the Chinese government has been calling for people participate in the project. Obviously, the expression of love can be best demonstrated by helping the poor in some backward regions. Therefore, many college students choose to work in these regions upon graduation. It is in these places that they are most needed and their knowledge can be made best use of.
The best way to show our love, in my opinion, is to follow the above mentioned example, giving love to the people during the hours of darkness. So when you see someone in difficulty or in distress, don’t hesitate to offer your hands. I believe the relationship between people will be more harmonious and our society will be a better place for us to live in. Let’s do as a famous saying goes:Ask not what others can do for you; ask what you can do for others.
Passage 7
What a vivid and accurate picture it is when describing the meaning of love in the dark. As is shown in the picture, the love is just like the light in the picture, which seems insignificant in the sun, but it certainly shines brighter in the dark. In other words, the darker the place is, the more precious the light will be. Love is somewhat the same. It surely means much more to the man who is in great difficulty than to the one who is in comforts.
To illustrate this conclusion, I will take Tao Xingzhi, one of the greatest educators in China, for an example. He was a man who gave love to those who needed most. In the old days quite a lot of children who were eager to go to school could not afford to do so. On seeing that, Mr. Tao gave up the comfortable life in the big city and set up a school especially for those poor children. Though most of these children only studied in his school for a short period, the things they learned there already changed their life. Many years after Tao’s death, they still bore in mind this kindness and sang highly for his contribution to Chinese education.
The best way to show our love, in my opinion, is to follow Mr. Tao’s example to give love to the most needed people. There is a need for love everywhere. So it is easy to show love by passing a glass of water to a thirsty people, giving a nickel to a miserable beggar, donating something to the victims in natural disasters and giving your hands to anyone in trouble. As long as we keep a place for love in our heart, love will become the source of priceless treasure we own. Let’s do as a famous saying goes: Ask not what others can do for you; ask whay you can do for others.
Passage 8
The picture vividly depicts a lovely American girl in traditional Chinese costume with a sweet smile on her face. She wears ribbons, necklaces and other accessories that are characteristic of the clothes of a certain Chinese minority group. Undoubtedly, the costume has added oriental charm to her beautiful look/appearance/features.
What the picture conveys goes far beyond only a new fashion trend. Instead, it carries cultural meanings. The fact that people from different countries are attracted to mysterious
3
Chinese culture indicates that to some extent a culture can be accepted, respected, appreciated and shared internationally. In other words, a nation's unique culture can become international through worldwide economic and cultural exchanges. Since the trend of globalization become irresistible, cultural communication can effectively improve mutual understanding and friendship.
In my opinion/From my perspective, national cultures as priceless spiritual treasure should be preserved and cherished. Meanwhile, there are good reasons to advocate international culture for those ideas from the other cultures, controversial or even absurd at first sight, can provide a different perspective for us to observe the world in the long run. However, when we are confronted with a different culture, we should be sensible enough to absorb its essence and to resist its dark side. Only in this way can we promote cultural development positively and make our world dimensional, colorful and vigorous.
Passage 9
At first sight of the picture, my eyes are brightened by the pretty girl, beaming with a simile on her face. She is a typical American girl, but she is dressed in our traditional Chinese costume. It seems that the girl is very proud of the Chinese costume.
It goes without saying that the picture indicates that a culture of one nation may become international, which is beneficial to all human beings. Actually the girl stands for two different cultures-western and eastern cultures. Her charming smile is the essential touch of the whole picture, which symbolizes the harmonious blending of the two cultures. With economic globalization, the blending of different cultures has become a necessary trend of the times. On one hand, a large number of people from different countries have been pouring into China. On the other hand, Chinese people are also exposed to different foreign cultures when they go abroad or when more foreign people come to China. In this way, people from various nations in the world will be able to acquire better understanding of each other.
As far as I am concerned, I think this phenomenon is good to all of us. It is an effective way to achieve efficient cross-cultural communication and promote world peace and prosperity.
Passage 10
At first sight of the picture, my eyes are brightened by the pretty girl, beaming with a smile. She is a typical American girl, but she is dressed in our traditional Chinese costume.
Through such an unexpected and yet harmonious design, the picture conveys a deep and soul-stirring meaning. The girl stands for two different cultures—western ture, which symbolizes the harmonious blending of the two cultures. And thus the picture assumes a kind of peaceful and inspiring beauty.
When it comes to cultural blending, we should attach importance to two factors. On the one hand, with economic globalization, the blending of different cultures has become a necessary trend of the times. Furthermore, the fact that all cultures are both open to and infiltrating into each other lays down the foundation for cultural blending. On the other hand, maintaining and vitalizing national cultures are most important in cultural blending—what have been and will always be most appealing to foreigners are the unique characteristics of national cultures. Only on this basis can we achieve efficient cross-cultural communication and promote world peace and prosperity.
