Abstract
Websearchusingstationary(desktop)computershasbecomeapervasiveactivity.Themobileuserinneedofinformation,how-ever,facesseveralproblemsinhisorherquesttosatisfyanin-formationneed.Mobiledeviceshavesmalldisplays,andmobileuserinterfacesareoftenlessthenusable,becausetheyimposethedesktopWebsearchparadigmonthemobileuser.Wepresentawirelesssearchenginebasedonnaturallanguagequeriestrans-mittedviapopularSmallMessageService(SMS)textmessages.Besidestraditionalkeywordbasedqueries,thesystemcanacceptquestionsorphrasesandreturnsresponsesthatcontainlikelyan-swers(Figure1)insteadoftraditionallistsofhyperlinks.TheadditionalprecisiongainedfromperformingalinguisticanalysisofthequeryhelpsextractinganswersfromWebpagesdirectly,whichrequiresnonavigation.ThesystemisimplementedusingaNLIRsystemresidingonaserver,whichcantranslatequestionsorphrasesintosearchenginequeriesorqueriestoSOAPWebser-vices,whereagatewaymediatesbetweenthemobilenetworkandtheInternet(Figure2).Whereasonthedesktopkeyboard-basedsearchstillprevails,wefindthatinamobilecontextquestionansweringtechniquescanhelpovercometheoutputconstraints.
