Unit 1
When Hitler decided to launch(开始、发射) his invasion (入侵、侵略)of Russia, he thought that nothing could stand in the way (挡道、妨碍)of his armies. Conqust(征服、战胜) it seemed, was inevitable(不可避免). He had surprise on his side, catching Stalin off his guard (趁人不备) by launching his attack without a declaration(不宣而战) of war. Hitler expected the campaign(战役) to last only a few months. In the event, it was to dray on(缓慢费力的走、拖延)for much longer. Like Napoleon before him, he had made a fatal(致命的、重大的) mistake in failing to reckon with(被加以考虑) the severity(严重) of the Russian weather. Many German soldiers were
to die form the cold as winter set in, bringing the German advance to a halt. (使停止)
Unit2
Hello. Welcome to your new car. I am your onboard(随车携带) computer-assisted driving system. It is my job to alert(使……注意) you to any hazards(危险) that may occur on the high way. From the moment you start up the car, I’ll be there to help you. When you want to relax, I can take control of the steering in your place, guiding you from one lane to another. If a car in front of you slows down suddenly, I’ll decrease(减少) your speed. If you get stuck in(停留、被阻塞) a traffic jam(阻塞、拥堵), the experience will no longer be so monotonous(单调、一成不变). Just sit back relax, and let me eliminate(消除) the worry. When you want to convert(使转变、改变) back from automatic(自动) control to manual(手动) control, that’s easy. Just press the right button mounted(安装) on the steering column.
Unit3
What is the best way to impress a prospective{可能成为} employer when you go for an interview for a job? As I see it, the best thing is to demonstrate(证明) that you have done your homework and know all about the firm. You should make every endeavor(努力、尽力), for example, to show that you know something about the structure(构造、结构) of the company, including the different lines of business it is involved in. Be enthusiastic(热情), let the interviewer know that you are not frightened by new challenges, but are willing to take a crack(尝试) at anything. Try to look at the situation from the standpoint(从…的观点看来) of the person offering the opportunity of employment. What sort of qualities is he likely to be looking for? Enthusiasm, certainly. So don’t leave your application waiting until just before the deadline. Apply early. Another thing that can make a difference is to follow up your interview with a letter expressing your enthusiasm to join the company.
Unit 5
You see that young man swimming out at sea?
He’s trying to swim out to the beacon(灯塔) and back. He must be insane(愚蠢、精神病) to have committed(效忠) himself to such a thing, the current is far too strong. I met on the beach before he set out. I don’t mind telling you that I was taken aback when he told me what he told me what he was going to do. I am a swimmer, but wouldn’t attempt it. And he didn’t look in good condition once, but he had clearly let himself go all to pieces. However, it seems like he had no choice. He told me that he had gone broke, not a penny left, and that old Burton would only find him a vacancy in his firm if he did the swim. That was another surprise. Burton seems such a mild mannered man, kind to everybody. Perhaps he thought the young man would not have the courage, that he would funk it. Then, again, perhaps Burton knew he was sending the young man, kind to everybody. Perhaps he thought the young man to his death, but was too cold-blooded to care. It only goes to show how deceptive appearances can be..
Unit 7
Peggy Noonan uses her weekly column(圆柱、专栏) to reflect on(反省、思考) her week. These span(横跨) a range of events(一系列事件), from the unusual to the everyday. Casual remarks from friends find their way in, such as feeling like paper coming out of a fax (传真、传真机) machine. Her morning stroll gets a mention stroll gets a mention, as do the joggers and hikers she shares it with. Her television viewing creeps in, too, and she let’s her imagination run free about whether Colin Powell may have seen the same film she did. Her thoughts are clearly never far from the events of September 11. she thinks she has noticed a baby boom in reaction to those events, despite the lack of statistical evidence. All she has to back up her belief is the evidence of her own senses. She also contends that the nation’s dream life has bee affected, with people suffering from recurring dreams centring on the disaster. She wants reading to send in accounts of these to her so that she can weave them together to form the basis of another article.
Unit 8
One of the best ways to enjoy the jungle is
making a trip on the river. This is better than taking the trails through the forest, as these are often blocked by undergrowth that gets tangled in your feet and makes traveling difficult. If you really wish to find yourself in the heart of the jungle, making use of the rivers that loop their way through the forest far the best way to get about. You can sit back and enjoy the slap of the oars as the boat glides through the water. Everywhere you can hear the clatter of birds, hidden out of sight deep in the jungle. At other times, they are clearly visible, circling in flocks overhead. But birds are not the only wildlife. The whole jungle swarms with a huge variety of animals, guaranteed to make your trip a spectacular event that you will never forget.
