As a high school student surveying my college options,I was limited by my parents, who forbade me from leaving the house and living a dorm life at 18.So for three years,I attended a local college. While I still enjoyed having my family close by and eating homecooked meals,I often found myself wondering what it would be like if I had got that “college experience”.
Finally, this past summer,I found myself with that option;I received an invitation to do research for 2 months at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend,Indiana.
At first,I had a difficult time getting used to being so free.I could go to my dorm and nap in the middle of the day;I could order a pizza whenever I wanted;I could actually wake up ten minutes before I had to be anywhere. The only downside was that I didn’t have complete freedom, though;I had to walk to the grocery store and wait for a bus to arrive to get to the local mall.
Other difficulties set in after the first few weeks.I missed having my family and friends nearby, and my roommate and I had very different sleep schedules so I was frequently tired.I found I was doing more chores living in a dorm.
Overall,my most difficult challenge was securing my privacy. If I was on the phone with a friend late at night,I had to leave my room. Each place I could stay in,including my room, was somehow a place that belonged to someone else.Despite the difficulties, though, there was always something to do and someone to hang out with.
All in all,I found that my dorm life and my home life had equal pros and cons. And while my shortlived experience differed from that of most others going away for the first time,it became a very real and unforgettable “college experience”.

The Tower of London was originally built by William the Conqueror, following his successful invasion of England. The Tower of London is perhaps better known as a prison. The prisoners would be brought, via the river, from Westminster where they would have been tried.Crowds would wait on the river bank to find out the verdict (裁决) to see if they would be treated to the spectacle of a public execution (处决).The executioner, with his long sharp axe would stand behind the accused on the boat.If the accused was guilty he would point his axe towards the victim and if not guilty he would point it away.People knew that if the accused was guilty there would be a public execution 48 hours later.
In the centre of the Tower of London is the famous White Tower. It is the oldest part of the fortress. Many people have been locked in the Tower,or the Bloody Tower, for religious beliefs or suspected treason (叛国罪).Famous prisoners included Anne Boleyn,Elizabeth I and Walter Raleigh.Elizabeth I was held in the Tower as a prisoner for two months by the order of her half sister,Queen Mary.Queen Mary felt that her position was being threatened by Elizabeth,so she imprisoned her in the Tower.
Ravens (渡鸦) have lived at the Tower of London for hundreds of years. The presence of the ravens is traditionally believed to protect the Tower. There is a legend that if the ravens leave the Tower of London, the White Tower will fall and a great disaster will happen.
